California Genealogical Society

We're an all-volunteer, non-profit organization located in Uptown Oakland that exists to help people trace and compile their family histories, regardless of their ancestry. Since 1898, the California Genealogical Society has been one of the premier genealogical resources in Northern California. Our holdings are rich in genealogy reference materials, both standard and unique, covering both people and places in California along with the rest of the country.

Do you want to know more about your ancestry? Identify your ethnic heritage? Learn how to research your family? We can help.

We have extensive genealogical resources available at our library, such as our expert research services, online one-of-a-kind genealogical indexes and databases. Our library houses over 38,000 reference materials from California, the United States, and around the world.

You can make a significant difference when you support us on May 4th. One of our goals is to raise $10,000 for a new high speed, microfilm/microfiche reader. Why? It's faster, smaller and easier to use when doing your family history research.

Help us make it happen. Thank you!
